How to Stock the Bar for a Company Party

A clean plan, a clear number, and one receipt. That is the whole job.

The short answer

Company parties run shorter and drink lighter than private ones. Plan on one drink per guest per hour for a two to three hour event, and lean toward wine and beer over a full spirits bar.

What to buy, by guest count

Based on a three hour company event. Mix used: 35% beer, 45% wine, 20% spirits.

Beer counted in cases of 24. Wine at five glasses per bottle. Spirits in 750ml bottles at about 16 drinks each.

Why this mix

Wine leads at a work event. It pours easily, it suits a dinner or an awards format, and it keeps the pace calm. A short spirits list with two options is usually plenty.

Wine carries a corporate event. A red, a white and a sparkling option covers nearly every guest without a full bar setup.

Four mistakes that cost the most

Stocking a full bar for a two hour event. Most of it comes home unopened.
No non alcoholic option. Plan on some of your team not drinking, and make that easy rather than awkward.
Ordering the day before. Volume orders need lead time.
No itemized receipt. Ask for one up front so expensing it later is simple.

If you want spirits, keep the list short. Vodka and whiskey cover most requests at a work party.
